Things to do in Canberra

Canberra is often overshadowed by its bigger neighbours Melbourne and Sydney, however it’s a city that shouldn’t be overlooked on your visit to Australia as it has many of its own unique sights and attractions to see.

Slab bang in between both Sydney and Melbourne, it’s a great stop off if you’re on a visit to the south east of Australia.

As Australia’s political capital, you can see where the decision makers of the country come together to debate its running at Parliament House. Old Parliament House also gives an insight into Australia’s history and is a museum for its past politics.

Canberra is a planned city, and as such there are plenty of beautiful parks to visit, with Lake Burley Griffin the city’s centrepiece. It’s an artificial lake which is in the geographical centre of the city and is home to plenty of water sports including paddleboating and windsurfing.

Culture vultures will also enjoy the museums and galleries of Canberra including the National Gallery of Australia, which has a vast selection of Aboriginal artwork, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Australia. Kids will also love Questacon, the city’s science museum which has an array of interactive exhibits.

Shopaholics can also find lots of stores and boutiques to grab a bargain in Canberra, with lively Lonsdale Street lined with trendy shops, and the bustling Old Bus Depot Markets providing hundreds of stalls for you to browse.
