A guide to The Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival

This year, from 27 June to 6 July, the Vision Splendid film festival will take place in the remote small town of Winton in Queensland.

The film festival is a 10 day celebration of Australian films that have been inspired by the Outback and many of the films will be played along Winton’s main street. Featured films include some of those which were made in and around Winton, a comedy collection of films and a Friday Night Freak Out which features some of the scariest films in the Outback.

Winton is perhaps best known as being the birth place of the famous Waltzing Matilda song, and also the home of QANTAS, Australia’s airline.

The opening night of the festival will consist of a party at the North Gregory Hotel and there will be the launch of a short film competition. During the festival there will also be a special Outback banquet, and on the closing night a selection of the short films created will be shown, and there will be a special display of the Musical Fence, a wire fence which can be played as a musical instrument.

If you’re a film fanatic and want to experience some of the best films about the Outback, in the Outback the best way to visit this film festival is by travelling to either Townsville or Brisbane and getting a regional flight to Winton.

When you arrive you can stay in the town, but many travellers opt to stay in one of the many camping and caravan parks near Winton, which will give you a more genuine Outback experience.
