The finalists for the prestigious Golden Backpack Awards have been announced ahead of the award ceremony on 8 November 2013.
The awards recognise the best that New Zealand and Australia have to offer backpackers in the way of hostels, tours and transportation.
For nine weeks travellers have been voting for their favourite hostels across every state and territory in the to countries.
Local categories are for best hostel and best tour, while national awards are for best tour operator, transport provider and car rental provider. Finalists in general categories of best travel agent, recruitment service, website and experience have also been announced.
Nominations for the best cultural experience are the Tamaki Maori Village, a recreation of a traditional Maori village in New Zealand; Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, in Cairnes; Kakadu Dreamtime Safari, an adventure through north Australia’s bush; and Daintree Dreaming, a tour through Queensland’s beaches and tropical rain forests.
The announcement for the finalists for Australia’s best hotel won’t be revealed until the night of the event as they reveal who is likely to win the individual state awards.
Around 94,000 votes have been cast, with event producer Tom Wheeler commenting that there was an increase of 13,000 votes from last year’s awards. He said it was “no doubt due to the increase in backpackers and the introduction of new awards,” and added: “Looking at the votes it seems there has been an increase in regions and cities working together to promote why their area is the best.”
